Duke is about 20-22 years old according to our Vet. We have had him for about 15 years, when he literally jumped into our lives. One warm summer day we had the side door open and all the sudden a little Chihuahua zipped in our door. It turns out some kids down the street were trying to catch him to get him out of the street and he saw the open door and came on in. When Duke came to us it appeared he had been on the streets for a little while, he was very skinny and shaking with fear. After taking him to the Vet we put up flyers and checked the news papers for about 6 weeks after we found him. During the 6 weeks we didn't name him because we weren't sure if we were going to keep him. After 6 weeks we had to decide what to do, it didn't take long. We took him back to the Vet and after checking him out more thoroughly, she told us that he was going to be just fine and she estimated he was about 5 years old. It was then that we named him after a late Chihuahua owned by our Grandparents, to which he bore a striking resemblance.

Duke is Dexter's polar opposite in almost every way. Where Dex is calm, Duke is high strung, where Dex barely barks, Duke rarely isn't barking where Dex is young, Duke is old. In all actuality Duke has really been a trooper about excepting Dex into a house where he has been the only Chihuahua for 10 years. As different as they are Duke and Dex have learned to love each other, and now after a rocky start, they actually play and take naps together. Duke is a very loving and affectionate dog with a lot of fire, that's probably why he survived on the streets before he came to us. Duke is a great example of the kind of great dog you can find at a Chihuahua Rescue, if we hadn't decided to keep him that's where he might have ended up. We think that Duke is a purebred but considering the way he came into our life we aren't entirely sure, regardless we love him just the same. Like Dexter, Duke is smooth coat Chihuahua.
